Railways draws up project for harbour terminus

KOCHI: Can you imagine sitting in a transparent vehicle on rails chugging over the Venduruthy bridge enjoying a spectacular view of the backwaters lulling the city to sleep? That is precisely what Kochiites are in for if the project drawn up by the Railways to turn the Cochin Harbour Terminus railway station at Willingdon Island into a heritage tourism destination sees the light of day.


Live demonstration of train operations, safari, exhibitions, restaurants and herbal gardens in the vast area under the jurisdiction of railways are part of the plans to bring the island into the tourist map of Kochi.

The picturesque station has a platform - currently infested with weeds - long enough to host a 15-coach train under a canopy of huge trees. The project envisages utilising the space to arrange a museum- like exhibition showcasing the technical evolution of train operations and the history of the famed terminus.

An old steam locomotive engine gleaming in all its glory will welcome the visitors with photographs, pictures and original equipment completing the vista.

A section will specially devoted to the signal system, both old and new, which is an integral part of railway operations.

Pit-lanes will be readied to provide a first hand experience of train maintenance.

A custom-built engine having a capacity to hold 10 to 25 passengers will serve to satiate the perennial curiosity of people to understand the working of a locomotive. It could be operated on the half-a-kilometre track leading up to the parcel yard currently left unused, sources said.

Once all these ready, the next step will be to run a self-propelled transparent vehicle with the capacity to carry 20-25 people across the Vembanad Lake up to the Ernakulam Junction. With many states in the country having come out successfully with the concept of Palace on Wheels, it is high time that the state joined the party with its own version of tourism on rails, sources said.

The dilapidated office complex will be renovated to include restaurants. Gardens flush with the aroma of herbs and spices will lend charm to the area which is at present running wild with weeds.

To be implemented on clearance by the authorities under the Build, Operate, Lease and Transfer (BOLT) system, entry fee will be the main form of revenue for the project envisioned by the Thiruvananthapuram division of the Southern Railway.

The railways is in the process of identifying a technical consultant to conduct a feasibility study for the project, sources said.

はっきり言ってわからないことだらけ、の印鐵線区。2003年時点のrailway divisions はこういうことだった（同じ内容がこっちにも）。タミルナードゥ+ケララをカバーする南鐵の線区はチェンナイ、マドゥライ、ティルチラパッリ、トリヴァンドラム、パーラッカードの合計５区。それが2007年の11月になって、新たにセーラム線区なるものが創設されたのだ。

インドにおける線区というのは単なるお役所的な区切りじゃなくて、予算取りや売り上げの計上などで非常にシビアな意味をもつ（誰にとって？それがよくわからない）ものらしいのだ。そしてその区切り線は州界線とは必ずしも一致していないのだ。

The Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) heads the organisation at the division level. There are currently 67 divisions on the system nationwide. The divisions are primarily involved with train running but may have loco sheds (repair shops for locomotives), coaching depots (repair home bases for passenger trains) and wagon depots (repair and maintenance points for freight stock).

Each Division has all the functional (both line and staff) organisations. The heads of these functional groups report to the DRM for administrative purposes but rely on guidance from the railway board and the zonal headquarters for policy guidelines.

セーラム線区は、もともとタミル・ケララに跨っていた（そしてとても収益性の高いものだったといわれる）パーラッカード線区から、タミルナードゥ州内陸部の都市セーラム周辺部を独立させる形で創設された。これを巡っては両州のCMレベルから、末端のrowdyまでが入り乱れて大変な揉め方をしたらしい。

大揉めの最中に、タミル側のDMK活動家はケララ側からやってくる列車を座り込みによって妨害するrokoをしちゃうぞなどと言って中央を脅したりしたらしい。

Tamil Nadu’s Minister and DMK strongman Veerapandi Arumugham last week threatened an indefinite rail roko in view of the attempts by the Kerala Government to stall the creation of a new Railway division in Salem. これ読むと、タミル側が推進派、ケララ側が反対派だったんだわな。

ホントは日参したいのだけれど、なかなか行けない大森ケララの風。

オクラのティーヤル：オクラと玉ねぎを焦がしたココナッツマサラで調理。（店内のボードでの説明文）

イドゥリのセットにワダも添えて貰った。

他に「サンマのスパイシーグリル」「ポロータ」などなどを注文して。

チャッティ・パッティリ：各種ナッツとドライフルーツのミルクレープ風ケーキです。（同上）

案内板には以上のみだが、板長の解説によればマラバール地方（カリカット周辺）のスペシャリティだということだった。紛れもなくケーキなんだけど、印度で食する粉食の感触が確かにあるね。

板長のカリカットでの修行の面白エピソードなども聞かせてもらった。

結局何が言いたくてこのエントリーをあげたかというと、←のようなアピールにもかかわらず、イドゥリの出がイマイチだという話を店長から聞いたから。毎日余ったイドゥリを自分で片づけてるって、そりゃまずいよ店長。

生ココナツのチャトニと見事なサンバルを付け合わせにした、こんな上物のイドゥリがたったの500円。みんなもっとイドゥリを注文しよー。

落ち穂拾いをいくつかしたら、このシリーズも打ち止めにしよう。

【旅先ではチャレンジャー】シリーズ

普段そっちの気は全然ないんだけど、一部で話題沸騰の猫カフェの元祖ともいえる極簡咖啡 (Minimal Cafe) に行ってみる。一般的なコーヒー、ケーキなどが供され、客は店内を闊歩するお猫さまに構って頂くのを待つという仕組み。コーヒーは悪くない。長居もしやすそう。行ってみてはじめて分かったのは、（この店を紹介するガイドブックなどの記事にはほとんど記述がないが）喫煙席があるということ。もののわかったオーナーなんだねえ。

台北の猫カフェに関しては、のけぞる位に充実した旅々台北の特集あり。

この旅行の間は「印度はお休み」にしようと思ってたんだけど、やっぱり出会ってしまうんだねえ、『印度雙人瑜珈』（意訳：二人で楽しむ愛のヨガ)DVD。リージョンの壁があるだろうから購入には到らなかったが。楽しい裏ジャケはこちらなどで。

印度関連でいえば、夜市でテイクアウトしたこのパロータもよかったなあ。冷めてもイケる、付け合わせのカレー無しで食べられるのは、葱の風味が効いてるから。ええと、呼び名は…葱油餅でいいんだっけ。どうもこの名前で調べてみると、仕上がりにも随分バラエティがあるようなのだけど、この時食したのは油たっぷりめ、グルグル巻きで層ができてるタイプ。こちらさんやこちらさんのお陰で作り方もよく分かった。

漢方問屋街であるとともに古いショップハウス建築でも有名な迪化街の一本裏手で遭遇した見事な巴洛克建築の民家。

前にも書いたけど、こういう（あえて乱暴な言葉で言えば）チマチマした近過去の遺物をありがたがる傾向というのは、歴史的な必然があるとはいえ、中華世界の中での台湾人の際だった特徴である気がする。それが日本人である自分にとっては妙に波長が合う部分であるわけなのだが。

それにしても、近代的高層ビルが林立するこの街の中心部にしてからが、不思議なくらいにくすんで見えるのは何故なのだろう。熱帯の日差しとのコントラストが強すぎるだけなのか、市街南東部の一部の地区以外はあらかた開発が終了してしまったという落ち着きなのか。世界一の金満国ともいわれるこの国の、名状しがたい暗さを湛えた街並みにこそ惹かれて再訪することになったのではないかという気がしてならない。

台北から一足延ばして、新竹に米粉を食べに行く。午前中は台北市内で用事を済ませ、12:00発の自強号で70分、ウカウカしてたんで駅弁を買いそびれ、餓鬼の様な状態で到着。

名高い新竹城隍廟へ赴き、お参りの前に腹ごしらえ。廟のなかにホーカーセンターがある有名スポット。名物の炒米粉、貢丸湯を掻き込んで人心地。屋台のフロントにはもちろん現総統の顔写真。

写真は道すがら行き当たった葬列。演歌歌手のパフォーマンス付き。

食事の後はお参り。線香を買って昼下がりの定時のお勤めに大勢の人と一緒に参加したんだけど、お経がやたらと念入りで長い、20分ぐらい経ったところで全身汗だくで離脱。やっぱ信心が足らんわ。

廟のすぐそばにある阿忠冰店で水分補給、洗面器くらいある器に盛られたマンゴーかき氷を一気食い。

それから古建築で有名な北門街をぶらぶら歩き。媽祖を祀る長和宮にふらりと入った。あとで調べたら結構歴史のある媽祖廟だったんだ。盂蘭盆会ということで廟前の道路も全部潰してお供え特設会場と化していて壮観。

廟内では台中國光歌劇團による舞台が賑々しく繰り広げられていた。

鵞鳥の丸焼きとかノンベジも没問題な各種のお供えが視界の彼方まで並んでる。創作系ではこの色っぽい人魚姫の他にも、クマのプーさんとかサンタクロースとか、何考えとんのじゃってなものが多数。

猛暑の中を街歩きしたらまたお腹空いちゃった。なんでもう一度城隍廟小吃街に戻って、「魚尤」魚羹を。ああ、でも肉圓もうまそうだったあ。

廟の裏手の西門市場では解剖学の授業に使えそうな見事な豚のディスプレイ。こんなものを眺めつつ駅に戻り、16:33発の自強号で再び台北に。３時間ちょっとの滞在だったけどよく喰ったもんだ。

インドの神さんの清らかな住まいも良いけれど、中国の神さんのおやしろの、生きる喜び全肯定のこの熱気も捨てがたい。やっぱり廟ははまるわ。

特殊ショッピング＠台北。

前回旅行で行きそびれていた台北車站1Fにある台鐵本舗、満を持して突入。

しかし凄く欲しかった弁当箱は、構内に何軒かある台鐵弁當ショップに飾ってあるだけで、売ってはいないのだった。それとミニチュア趣味はないけど、いんどっ仔の模型なんかあったら買っちゃうかも、と心構えしていたのだけれど、これも見当たらず。品揃えの主流はノスタルジー系復刻商品。この国では、鐵に限らずやたらとノスタルジックなものが流行になる傾向があるように思えるのだが、どんなものか。

お客さんも、いかにもな顔ぶれ以外にもふつうの小母さんみたいな人々もいて、品定めに余念がないのだった。

滞在最終日、街にいられる時間も残すところあと１時間ちょっとというところまできて、MRTの台北車站駅構内を歩いていたときのこと、いきなり←のような案内広告が目に飛び込んできた。えっ、マジ？、台鐵だけじゃなくてMRTにもグッズショップがあった訳?　今日まで知らなかった不覚！！！

ってことで、既に改札してたんだけど、チケットを無駄にして外に出て、分かりにくい地図を便りにさがしたのだった、台北捷運商品館を。

辿り着いてみれば、無情にも臨時休業、がああん。切符だけじゃなくて、滞在中最後のまともな食事の時間も棒にふったのにいいい。

諦めきれずにしばらく周りをウロウロしてディスプレイの写真を撮りまくったり。我ながら奇行だとは思うのだが、大都会の無関心、不審な目を向ける人もいないのだった。

運行開始からまだ日も浅い貓空纜車をモチーフにした脱力系グッズなども多数、ラインナップの充実は貧弱な東京メトロのそれとは比べものにならない。次回の突撃あるのみじゃ。
