Italy won the 2006 soccer World Cup on Sunday evening, edging 10-man France 5-3 in a penalty shootout at the Olympiastadion to capture its fourth world championship.

Fabio Grosso struck the winning spot kick for Marcello Lippi's side after the teams drew 1-1 in normal and extra time. In a wild turn of events, France captain Zinedine Zidane, in the last game of his career, was sent off 10 minutes from the end for headbutting Italian defender Marco Materazzi.

Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro lifted the trophy to close out the 32-nation tournament, which kicked off on June 9 when host Germany took on Costa Rica in Munich. France was chasing its second world title.

"The further we progressed in this tournament, the more we realized we could win it," Lippi said. "Our confidence grew from match to match, especially when we beat Germany in a stadium that couldn't have been more perfect for them.

"We always had hope, even though we were up against great players. I'm a fan of Zidane, but the fourth official saw what happened. It's bizarre to end your career like that, if it is the end of his career."

The French took the lead in the seventh minute through the 34-year-old Zidane, who converted a penalty after Florent Malouda was tripped inside the penalty area.

Italy, though, equalized 12 minutes later when Materazzi outjumped French midfielder Patrick Vieira to head home a corner taken by man-of-the-match Andrea Pirlo.

The match, staged before a sellout crowd of 69,000, settled down until extra time when Zidane picked up his red card. When the match went to penalties, French substitute David Trezeguet was the only player to miss a shot, caroming his effort off the crossbar.

Germany striker Miroslav Klose finished as the tournament's leading scorer with five goals, while Italy's Gianluigi Buffon, who conceded only two goals in normal play--one a penalty and the other an own goal--was named the best goalkeeper.

In 2010, the World Cup will be held in South Africa, and will be the first finals to be hosted by an African nation.

China expressed opposition Thursday to a U.N. resolution drafted by Japan that criticizes North Korea for its latest missile launches and called for sanctions against the nation during an ambassador-level meeting with Japan and the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council, according to diplomatic sources.

During the meeting, China presented a Chinese-drafted Security Council presidential statement that deleted the reference to sanctions, and the U.N. Charter's Chapter VII--which enables the security council to use force and impose sanctions--from Japan's draft resolution, the sources said.

China and Russia have been calling for a presidential statement on the issue, rather than a resolution. If successful, Japan, Britain, France and the United States would be pressed to make a difficult decision regarding whether or not to accept the statement. Unlike a resolution, a presidential statement has no binding power. However, it is capable of allowing Security Council members to display their solidarity, as in principle, a presidential statement is adopted by unanimous decision.

Japan's draft resolution included sanctions drawn up under the U.N. Charter's Chapter VII, requesting U.N. member nations to prohibit the movement of money and materials that could contribute to the development of weapons of mass destruction, according to the sources.

In a presidential statement, Chapter VII cannot be mentioned, and the security council cannot impose sanctions.
